Vernon Dunn.

Vernon Dunn.

Dunn

Mr. Vernon Dunn, age 91, of Rockford passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 7, 2009, while working in his barn.

Vernon grew up on the Dunn farm (on 13 Mile Road) and helped his parents Chester and Anna with the farm duties. When their family home burned, they lived in a tent on the farm.

He attended Edgerton School and graduated in 1936 from Rockford High School.

After high school, Vernon worked at a gas station (M-57 and Northland). He met Dorothy and invited her to a car race. After dating, he presented her with a ring, and she accepted. They were to be married at the Oakfield United Methodist Church, but the church burned; they were married in a barn.

Vernon worked at other places (Federal Mogul, General Motors, Gibsons, Lakey Foundry, and even delivered the U.S. mail), but farming was in his blood. He was so very proud of his Guernsey cattle and his 1954 Farmall “Super C” tractor. It was important for him to drive Ford cars and trucks.

After Vernon sold the dairy cattle, he whole-heartedly took up golf. With humor, it is said that he went from “cow paddy” golf to the real game of golf.

Vernon is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Dunaven, whom he married on October 4, 1941; children, Sandra Dunn of Rockford, Mrs. Nancy Edgecomb of Rockford, and Maxine and Dr. Frank Spoolstra of Rockford; grandchildren, Michael Winegar, Lance and Denise Edgecomb, Lisa and Rob Ford, Jacob Spoolstra, Jared Spoolstra; great-grandchildren, Taylor Edgecomb, Kelly Edgecomb, Olivia Ford, and Jade Ford; sisters, Mrs. Doris (Don) McIntyre, Mrs. Rosemary Goodell; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Lucy Dunn, Mrs. Margie Dunn; aunt, Mrs. Mary Carpenter; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Shelly McNay; his great-grandson, Christian; his brothers, Hollis, Russell, and Roger; his sister, Elizabeth Kerr; his son-in-law, Lee Edgecomb; and brothers-in-law, Robert Kerr and Donald Goodell.

The service for Mr. Dunn was held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Courtland-Oakfield United Methodist Church with Dr. Michael Conklin officiating. Interment in Courtland Township Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Courtland-Oakfield United Methodist Church. Relatives and friends may gathered at the Pederson Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Arrangements were made by Pederson Funeral Home, Rockford.
