RPS to unveil artificial turf at Ted Carlson Stadium

Rockford Public Schools (RPS) will formally dedicate its new artificial turf multi-purpose field on Thursday, September 3, 2009, at the football home opener against Holt. Voters approved the project as part of the district’s 2008 bond issue.

After carefully studying artificial turf options, district officials contracted to install a Mondoturf Eco-fill field. This cutting-edge turf is 100 percent recyclable, free of carcinogenic substances, comprised of 17.5 percent post-consumer recycled content, and is LEED friendly. In addition, the materials maintain a lower surface temperature, provide shock absorption to reduce the risk of injury, and materials are natural-looking and durable.

One of the primary reasons for turfing the field is to maximize its availability for band, football, lacrosse and other activities. A traditional sod field must “rest” between events, which limits its availability. In addition, weather has a significant impact on the condition of sod fields and can render them unusable.

Plans are in the works for a formal dedication of the field on Sept. 3 prior to the 7 p.m. football game against Holt. Please feel free to contact Athletic Director Tim Erickson at (616) 863-6040 for more details.
