Canine blood drive to benefit veterinary clinics

The West Michigan Academy of Small Animal Practitioners (WMASAP) is hosting a canine blood drive to benefit Animal Blood Resources International on Saturday, October 17. The blood drive will be hosted at Great Lakes Hospital for Animals, 6273-A West River Dr., Belmont, from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Your canine’s donation will provide blood products to veterinary clinics both locally and nationally. The donated blood is processed into packed red blood cells and plasma, therefore your dog will actually be helping two dogs when he or she donates.

Blood donation is a simple procedure. It does not require anesthesia or sedation and only takes 15 to 20 minutes. Giving blood does not require fasting nor will it hinder your dog’s normal activities. Your dog will not receive orange juice after donating, but he or she will receive treats! You will also receive copies of your dog’s blood work, tick-borne disease screen, and their blood type by mail within three weeks post donation.

The WMASAP is looking for dogs that are healthy and friendly, weigh 50 pounds or more, are aged between 1-7 years, are current on vaccines and parasite-free, are not taking medication except heartworm and flea preventatives, and dogs who do not have a heart murmur.

If you own a dog fitting this description and would like your pet to become a donor, please call (616) 361-0220 to schedule your appointment.
