Meet Fred Meijer with authors of Stories of His Life

The Sparta Township Historical Commission (STHC) is proud to sponsor “Preserving the Past for an Educated Future” as a new museum fundraiser. On Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p/m/, join the STHC at the Sparta Church of the Nazarene to meet Fred Meijer with the authors of Stories of his Life.

In the book, Bill Smith and Larry ten Harmsel offer an engaging glimpse into the life of Fred Meijer (b.1919), a prominent retailer whose Grand Rapids-based company has grown from one local store in Greenville to a chain of nearly 200 stores in five Midwestern states. Smith and ten Harmsel have gathered reminiscences from nearly 100 people who have known and interacted with Fred during the past 80 years, from U.S. Presidents and ambassadors to clerks at the grocery checkout. The result is a unique biography of an innovative and energetic businessman whose economic, philanthropic and philosophical influence has been felt across a broad segment of the Midwest.

Replete with photos and captivating anecdotes, Fred Meijer: Stories of His Life is an inspiring read not only for Meijer buffs but also for students of business and management in modern America.

As a courtesy to STHC, Fred and Lena Meijer, along with Smith and ten Harmsel, will graciously be available for book signings immediately following the program. For more information, please call Martin Pulsifer at (616) 887-1566 or (616) 340-7076.
