Rockford defeats East Kentwood in first game of playoffs
by BECKY ERSTE-HOLMBERG
Amidst the rain, Halloween Eve started out slowly for the Rockford Rams. Right from the get-go, the East Kentwood Falcons went up 6-0 but missed their extra point. On Rockford’s first possession, Ryan Darby ran 9 yards, and Joe Johnson finished for a first down and more to the 48-yard line. Rockford quarterback Taylor Masiewicz ran for a first down and then another by Nick Smythe, who ran it all the way down close to the 10-yard line. Johnson ran in for the touchdown, and the extra point was good. The score was Rockford 7, East Kentwood 6.
Next came a squib kick and then a run to the 45-yard line. The Falcons scored on the drive with a two-point conversion, making the score Rockford 7, East Kentwood 14. The Rams answered by taking the ball all the way down to East Kentwood’s 11-yard line with good plays by Johnson and Darby. The first quarter ended at 7-14, East Kentwood.
Rockford started the second quarter on a bad note by fumbling the ball, but East Kentwood fumbled as well, and the Rams recovered on the 45-yard line. More good runs by Johnson followed, and Masiewicz made a first down. Johnson took the ball in for another score to make it Rockford 13, East Kentwood 14.
The Rams tried for a two-point conversion, but didn’t make it. On the next drive by East Kentwood, Rockford recovered a fumble and scored a field goal just before half to make the score 16-14, Rockford.
The third quarter brought the rain again. However, the game was becoming such a treat rather than a trick, as the Falcons tried with an on-side kick, which they recovered and ended up scoring on the next couple of plays. The score became Rockford 16, East Kentwood 20.
The possessions went back and forth after that and, at the end of the third quarter, the score remained with Rockford down by 4.
The fourth quarter began with the Rams going ahead 23-20 from a touchdown run by Smythe and a good extra point. East Kentwood had their say with a long run to the 45-yard line. However, they didn’t make it from there, as the Rams’ Joe Stefanski sacked the Falcons’ quarterback for a big loss on the next play. East Kentwood punted, and Darby returned the punt for Rockford. Johnson took it to the 34-yard line. Masiewicz snuck to about the 20-yard line and Johnson again took it to the 12-yard line, dragging defenders with him.
With 2:14 left in the game, Smythe ran in for another Ram touchdown. The score became 30-20, Rockford. The Falcons fumbled the ball on their next possession and Tyler Pratt recovered for Rockford. With 1:43 left to go, Johnson ended a great game with a good run to the 20-yard line.
The Rams move on in the playoffs with another home game this Friday against the tough Grand Haven team. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m.

Woman killed by trailer disconnected from van
November 5, 2009 · Filed Under Top News Stories · CommentA trailer came loose from the vehicle towing it, became airborn and went over a car before striking the next car and killing the driver. Photo courtesy of The Grand Rapids Press.
A Grattan Township woman was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident on Ten Mile Road on Wednesday, October 28.
Forty-six-year-old Toni Hall died when a trailer which appeared homemade came loose from the van towing it and struck her vehicle. The incident happened around 9:15 a.m. on Ten Mile Road between Je Ne Be Drive and Brower Lake Road. The trailer apparently became airborne after disconnecting with the van towing it, flew over the car in front of Hall’s and struck Hall’s SUV in the windshield. It was reported the tongue of the trailer hit both driver and passenger in the car.
Thomas Dells, 58, of Rockford, was the driver of the van towing the trailer.
Kathleen Rahe, a resident of the area, was driving the same route just prior to the accident while taking her children to school. She said at about 9 a.m. the passed the place where the accident would happen and was returning home when she saw rescue vehicles on the scene.
“I feel sorry for the guy in a way, but there is a victim involved here,” Rahe said. “There are supposed to be chains as a backup. A few minutes earlier I was going in the same direction half an hour earlier with my kid. It could have been us.”
After the collision Hall’s vehicle rolled several times. Her passenger, 39-year-old Debra Carter, was injured.
