On Friday night, Nov. 27 , the Rockford Rams varsity hockey team traveled south for a post Thanksgiving match-up against their archrival the East Kentwood Falcons. Although a great number of loyal Ram fans turned out in support, the Rams unfortunately lost to the Falcons 4-2 in a well-played and hard-fought game.
The first period belonged to the Rams, as they controlled play at both ends of the ice and appeared to be in total control of the contest even though neither team managed a score as period one ended at 0-0.
The second period saw both teams come out
to score as East Kentwood was first to put in a goal at 14:33 in the period. The Rams fired back less than
a minute later, as senior forward Cody Cantu put one
in the net with a nice assist from junior forward Thomas Soupal. The Rams found the net again when senior defensemen Eric Conroy scored at the 12:20 mark on a beautiful feeder pass from senior defenseman Robert Perry and senior forward Noah Greco, making it
2-1 Rams. Unfortunately the Rams did not hold
the lead long as the Falcons capitalized on a Ram turnover with a goal to end the second period tied at two goals apiece.
The third and final period started with East Kentwood capitalizing on another Ram turnover at the 14:24 mark, making it 3-2 Falcons. Although the Rams fought hard and had more scoring opportunities than the score shows, the Falcons scored again for their fourth and final goal at 10:31 of the third period, putting them up by two goals.
The Rams fought back hard the rest of the period but couldn’t find the net, as a few penalties put them down a player and on the penalty kill as well. The game ended with the score at Falcons 4, Rams 2.
The Rams’ next game is a home contest on Saturday, Dec. 5, against the East Grand Rapids Pioneers. Game time is 6:00 p.m. at Walker Ice & Fitness Center.
