HCNC keeps outdoors fun in every season

Howard Christensen Nature Center continues to offer free or inexpensive ways to enjoy Michigan’s winter weather. A group of local Boy Scouts recently enjoyed their yearly Klondyke derby, the Olympics of Scouting.

The boys are tested on Scouting skills such as knot tying, shelter building, cooking outdoors and more. The boys also make a sled to carry their materials from each stations. Troop leaders give the boys scenarios in which to put their skills to test, such as like first aid skills. This year the boys made a splint and  streacher as one of their medical tests. “This is really a great way for the boys to put all their skills together in a competition,” said Scout mom Lisa Budd. Howard Christian Nature Center is located north of Rockford at 16160 Red Pine Drive in Tyrone Township.
