When Penny Waltman and her sisters were planning a family wedding, they were frustrated to find no local fine linen service, and had to order through the mail. Seeing a need for this kind of service, Special Occasions was born. Now the family company has two locations serving Michigan, Special Occasions West in downtown Rockford at 116 Courtland St., as well as her sisters’ location, Special Occasions East in Grand Blanc.

Waltman, a Rockford resident, opened her store in 2006. “I love Rockford and I live near the shop, so of course I wanted to be in downtown Rockford,” she said. “Customers love visiting Rockford and frequently shop in our downtown after meeting with us.”

Special Occasions offers the largest selection of table linens in the greater Grand Rapids area and are affordably priced. In addition to standard table linen, event planners can find floor length linens in hard-to-find colors, designer patterns for any size table including cocktail tables, chair covers in various styles and fabrics, custom favors and decorations. They provide the custom chair covers found at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.

“We are locally owned and always available,” said Waltman. “We personally set up the events we organize and treat every occasion as if it were the most important event.”

Here in Rockford, Special Occasions is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday by appointment. In addition to Penny, visitors may meet with Lauren and Sue who are also on staff.

“Lauren, Sue and myself love decorating and fabrics, and we all pride ourselves on making sure our linens are clean and freshly pressed for the best presentation possible,” Waltman stated. “We live for the joy of seeing our customers’ faces light up when they first see their event all set up.”

Visitors to the Rockford shop will find a friendly, warm and inviting atmosphere where it is relaxing to try out the different table settings and chair covers to assure you get the right look for your event.

Stop in to visit the staff at Special Occasions West on Courtland Street, or visit online at www.special-occasion.net, or call the store at (616) 866-0900.
