Rockford tennis wins own invitational

The Rockford girls varsity tennis team started the 2010 season by hosting the first Rockford Quad Invitational April 17 on the newly resurfaced courts. The updates to the court surfaces, fencing and perimeter access were made possible by the bond approval this past year.

Coach Tom Huizing said, “I love them and are proud of them. The past five years we couldn’t host an event and now we can bring in teams and be proud of it.”

Senior Tara Murray thinks the new courts are “pretty awesome!”

Rockford went on to win the invitational by six of the eight flights, finishing with 22 points, St. Joseph with 11 points, Sturgis with 9, and Northview 7.

Rockford’s girls varsity tennis team of (l–r) MJ Bothma, Lauren Korlewitz, Coach Tom Huizing, Heather Williams, Tara Murray, Katie Rachon, Jenelle Miller, Nichole Strobel, Julie Daukss, Alex Stembaugh, Megan Zawacki, Mackenzie Young and Lindsay Gauger brave the 40 degree temperature and high winds to win the Rockford Quad Invitational. Team captains Williams and Rachon accepted the team plaque for first place.

Championship medals were presented to Rockford second singles MJ Bothma, third singles Alex Stembaugh, first doubles and team captains Katie Rachon and Heather Williams, second doubles Mackenzie Young and Lindsay Gauger, third doubles Tara Murray and Nichole Strobel, and fourth doubles Megan Zawacki and Julie Daukss.

St. Joseph earned championship medals by first singles Lindsay Peirce and fourth singles Maggie VanWinkle.

Daukss stated, “All the teams brought the competition and a good start to the season.”

Rockford will host another invitational on May 1 starting at 8:30 a.m. and the OK Red conference meet on May 15 starting at 8 a.m. Mark your calendars and come cheer on the team as they progress toward the 2010 regionals and state finals. The girls varsity team made it to the state finals last season under Tom Huizing’s coaching.

Other regular season home matches will start at 4 p.m. on April 27 against Hudsonville, May 3 against Grand Haven, and May 5 against West Ottawa. Regular season away games will start at 4 p.m. at Jenison on April 28, Muskegon on May 10, Reeths-Puffer on May 13 and Caledonia on May 19.

The entire team is participating in Relay for Life cancer walk May 21-22 at North Rockford Middle School and encourages the community to participate.
