On April 27, the Rockford Rams golf team competed in the OK Red Mid-Season Tournament at L.E. Kaufmann Golf Course, hosted by Grandville. The Rams fell to the Bulldogs by five shots to finish second. Three Rams golfers made it into the top 10 but couldn’t make up the difference, as Grandville shot 324 to the Rams’ 329. The Rams golfers who medaled were Trent Davison with 79 for second place, Sam Gallup with 81 for fifth, and Jake Chaffee with 83 for seventh. This brought the Rams to second place, one point behind Grandville in the OK Red standings.
This Saturday, May 1, the Rams competed in the Forest Hills Central Invitational at Grand Valley State University. This was the strongest field the Rams had competed against yet this year with a total of six state-ranked teams out of a strong field of 17 teams. The Rams showed their depth with four out of five golfers breaking 80. Gallup took 10th with 77, and Steven Mette, Chaffee, and Eric Conroy all tied for 16th with a score of 79. This gave the Rams a total of 314, which fell short of only Forest Hills Central and East Grand Rapids.
This should be a nice stepping stone for the Rams squad as they move into the bulk of their season. Their OK Red record is currently 11-1, with an overall record of 59-4.
Rockford’s Spring Classic will be held May 8 and the Rockford Invitational May 15. These are two very good golf tournaments in which many of the best teams in the state of Michigan will be competing. The Spring Classic will be held at Cedar Chase with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Four of the eight competing teams currently hold a top 10 state ranking in their respective divisions. Rockford’s Invitational includes many top-ranked teams competing, such as Forest Hills Central, East Grand Rapids and Rockford.
