On Thursday, May 6, the Corner Bar in Rockford donated a $1,300 check to 10-year-old Emma Hill to support her father, Jeff Hill, in his fundraising efforts to participate in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Ride for the Cure in Death Valley, Calif. Young Emma is a juvenile diabetes patient. Diagnosed at age 5, Emma is just one of the over one million children and adults who live with juvenile diabetes and the complications this disease causes.
Because this disease impacts so many people, especially children, The Corner Bar held a “fan drive” on the social media site Facebook. For a designated period of time, the Corner Bar contributed one dollar for every new fan they received on the Corner Bar fan page, up to 1,300 new fans, which equaled $1,300 for the cause. Through the power of social media, the Corner Bar received an astonishing 1,000 new fans in one day and reached the cap very shortly after that.
The Death Valley ride is October 15-18, 2010, and is 105 miles through Death Valley, Calif. all in one day. Average temps reach the low 90s that time of year, but have gotten into the low 100s in some ride years. There are 45 riders going out this year from all over West Michigan. About 300-400 riders participate in the Death Valley ride every year. This is Jeff Hill’s first year to participate, and already the training is intense.
