Lady Rams track & field team finishes with perfect dual meet record

The number one state-ranked Lady Rams of Rockford completed their regular dual meet season in dramatic fashion this past Monday, May 10 at Ted Carlson Memorial Stadium, where they edged perennial rival East Kentwood 78-59 to remain undefeated in OK Red action.

The Rams claimed victory in nine of the 17 events. Winning individual performances were given by seniors Sarah Birkmeier (pole vault), Rachel Jerrils (400 and 200 dash), Sam Mette (300 hurdles), and junior Emily Halliday (shot put). The Rams’ 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter relay squads also claimed victories. Relay team members were Jerrils, Abby Blanchard, Courtney Klawieter, Margaret Smiley, Katie DeHaan, Katie Carlson, Taylor Manett, Catie Rietsema and Jane Hawks.

“This was a total team effort. We took 11 of a possible 13 third-place finishes, which creates a 22-point swing, coupled with eight of 13 second place finishes. A lot of our young ladies stepped it up and got the job done,” said Ram Head Coach Randy VanderVeen.

This victory nearly guarantees the Rams of a partial OK Red title with the conference championship meet happening Friday, May 21 at Jenison.

“We are halfway there, but there is lot of work to be done to claim this title outright,” stated VanderVeen.
