Scouts get hands-on fireman experience

For many boys, they only dream of what it is like to be a fireman and to use a large water hose to put out fires. For the members of Crestwood’s Cub Scout Pack 3285, that dream became a reality when they received a visit from Deputy Chief Jerry Herrington of the Cannon Township Fire Department for their October pack meeting. October was national fire safety awareness month.

Following a review of the fire safety rules, the boys were treated to a tour of the fire truck and the equipment used by a firefighter. The boys were especially intrigued with the thermal imaging camera used to identify people and animals inside a smoke-filled building.

“It makes you look like an alien,” exclaimed Bear Scout Richard Mortimore.

Each boy was also given the opportunity to handle a fire hose. According to Webelos Scout Sean McLellan, “It’s not as easy as it looks!”

Each boy had a better appreciation for the hard work involved in being a fire fighter.

The members of Pack 3285 would like to thank Deputy Chief Herrington and the Cannon Township Fire Department for giving them the opportunity to be a “fireman for an evening.”
