Great Start Parent Coalition of Kent County announces third annual Diaper Drive
Diapers are one of the most basic necessities for infants and toddlers, yet many in Kent County go without. An adequate supply of diapers costs about $75 a month—simply out of reach for many families. Diapers are not covered by assistance programs such as W.I.C. or food stamps, and local food pantries rarely have enough diapers on their shelves. One food pantry director shared a story about a family with five adopted children—three of whom have special needs. The mother and father recently both lost their jobs, and the diapers provided by the food pantry enabled the family to focus their limited finances on other needs for their children.
The Great Start Parent Coalition of Kent County is conducting its third annual Diaper Drive. After collecting about 70,000 diapers over the past two years, the goal for this year is to collect another 40,000. Diapers will be given to local food pantries and resource centers to distribute to families in need. People are being asked to drop off unopened packages of disposable diapers at drop boxes around the community, including: any Walgreens stores in Kent County, Kent District Library branches, David D. Hunting YMCA, Visser YMCA and South East YMCA. The Great Start Parent Coalition also will accept monetary donations by check or through PayPal on its website at www.diaperdrivekent.org.
