Ram golfers bring home varsity championship

The Rockford Rams varsity golf squad arrived at Stonegate Golf Club in Twin Lake, Mich., with a points lead in the overall conference championship race due to their 13-1 record during the regular season. However, they knew that anything was possible. All it would take would be a mediocre day from them and a good day by others and they might just lose out. They chose to continue to choose to focus on the task at hand. They wanted to win that tournament, that day.

While the Rams came in second for the fourth time this season in an 18-hole contest, they gathered enough points to take home the 2011 OK Red boys varsity golf championship.

The Rams were led by the number two player in the OK Red, Steven Mette. Mette fired a 77 to finish in fourth place. Junior Jake Stephan fired 78 to finish T7 and claim his first All Conference selection. Freshman AJ Varekois carded an 81 and chalked up his first All Conference selection by finishing fifth overall this season.

Coach Eric Cullum commented, “Congratulations to all the Rams for their accomplishments so far this season. May the post-season take us to Oakland University! Go Rams.”
