Mrs. Ellen Jean “EJ” Boss, age 90, of Rockford went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, July 31, 2011. She was a graduate of Central High School.

For 34 years, EJ worked as a waitress at the Bierstube. For over 70 years, she was a lifetime member of Rockford United Methodist Church. EJ was a very hardworking lady who devoted a lot of her time to her church. She was delighted to help with the kitchen design, wedding receptions, pasties (which were her favorite), and funeral luncheons. EJ, her husband Joe, and their children donated the beautiful, ornate, stained glass window to the new sanctuary at Rockford United Methodist Church.

EJ continued her work ethics at home; she designed and built her own home, kept her swimming pool spotless, and meticulously cared for her yard and flowers. Her beautiful backyard was opened to everyone for Sunday evening church. EJ enjoyed playing card games, Cribbage, Hearts, Set Back, and others. She was a great entertainer and had gifts for the winner and, of course, a “booby prize” for the loser. She loved playing tennis, was very competitive, and played well into her 80s. EJ was a seamstress, who made her own clothes and her daughters’ wedding dresses. She was very artistic with embroidery and stencil art for her home. EJ could buy a very inexpensive item and magically make something pretty. She made many beautiful craft items as gifts that are cherished by her family and friends. EJ lived a very full life and was so very proud of her family.

She is survived by her children, Jan and Harold Woods Jr. of Rockford, Barbara and David Swanson of Oconomowoc, Wis., and Donald and Diane Boss of Dimondale; her grandchildren, Karen, Harold and Elizabeth, Tom, Jim and Stephanie, Diane and Greg, Kevin and Marie, Jeff and Kimberly, James and Theresa, Eric and Heidi, Jason and Mark, and Christopher Woods, Eric and Genevieve Swanson, Andrea and Daniel Popp, Kirstin Boss, Ashlee Boss, Dana and Mark Starr; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Rachael, Alex, Jackie, Nikki, Tyler, Owen, Carson, Grant, Lucas, Nicholas, Brayden, Annalyse, Konner, Tate, Logan, Seth, Catherine, Patience, Sapphira, Jordan, Eric Jr., Isiah, Cheyenne, Hallie, Merissa, Jaidah, Kiya, Courtney, Jenna, Kaitlyn, Emma Jean, Natalie, and Annalisa. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph on September 20, 1992; her brothers and sisters; and her grandchildren, David, Alexis and Zachriah.

The service for Mrs. Ellen Jean “EJ” Boss will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Pederson Funeral Home with Pastor Jeff Williams officiating. Interment will be in Plainfield Township Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the American Cancer Society and Alzheimer’s Association. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and prior to the service on Thursday.

Arrangements were made by Pederson Funeral Home, Rockford.
