Citizens invited to attend sheriff’s academy

The Kent County Sheriff’s Office Citizen Police Academy is a vital program allowing the citizens of the county to become more familiar with their sheriff’s office. The intent of the academy is to help the residents of Kent County know more about the men and women who are protecting their communities and why they make the decisions, they do.

Citizen’s Academy participants will come to class with a variety of backgrounds, ages, questions and philosophies regarding both life and law enforcement. Academy participants will be provided with informational presentations as well as some limited hands-on training experiences, including a ride-along with a patrol officer, and a correctional facility tour.

The Citizen’s Academy is also designed to provide a multifaceted educational experience. While the citizens will learn what sheriff’s deputies do on a daily basis, deputies will also gain insight from the participants as to their perceptions and concerns.

The Citizen’s Academy should be a very interesting, worthwhile experience, and will be even better with your participation. The academy will be held at the Sheriff’s Office, 701 Ball Ave. NE, Grand Rapids, on Thursday nights from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The academy will run for 11 weeks and will start on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012. Attendance at all sessions is strongly urged. Space is limited, so please apply today. If you have any questions or would like to apply, please feel free to contact Sandi Jones at (616) 632-6221.
