Rockford donors save potential 1,698 lives

Seventy-one people signed in at the Michigan Blood drive on December 5 at the Rockford Community Cabin and donated 51 units of blood, potentially saving 153 lives.

Melissa Meitz, donor relations specialists, said she believes Rockford residents have every reason to be proud of their donations in 2011. This year at blood drives held by Michigan Blood in Rockford, 700 people signed up to give blood. They donated a collective 566 units of blood, including donations by 18 first-time donors. These units of blood equal the potential of saving 1,698 lives.

The following residents reached gallon milestones: Polly Voneschen has donated four gallons of blood, Alan Matheny has donated three gallons, Brenda Bera-Alters has donated six gallons, and Michael Breen has donated an amazing seven gallons.

Opportunities to donate in January include a blood drive on Monday, Jan. 2, at the Community Cabin, 220 N. Monroe Street in Rockford from noon to 7 p.m.
