Humane Society of West Michigan receives 20 dogs from puppy mill

The Humane Society of West Michigan has taken 20 dogs from the 353 dogs that the Allegan Shelter rescued from a puppy mill.

The dogs in their care are all Shih Tzu mixes between the ages of one and five years old. The Humane Society is currently medically treating them. These dogs will need medical attention due to their prior living conditions. Typically, puppy mill dogs live in small cages and can suffer from medical issues and neglect. The Humane Society is making sure that each receives a veterinary exam, a bath, treatment for any injuries or illnesses and spay or neuter surgery. Many will receive some dental work as well. These dogs are being given continued medical attention by the Humane Society veterinary staff until they are adopted.

“We want to give these dogs a chance to live a great new life outside of a cage,” said Dr. Chris Buckley, director of veterinary medicine. “Our goal is to find each of them a loving, caring home where they can experience life as a cherished companion.”

The Humane Society is in need of financial donations to help cover the medical expenses. In addition, they need new fluffy blankets and toys for these dogs.

It is anticipated that some of the dogs will be available for adoption next week. Please stay tuned to their website and Facebook page to find out when these dogs will be available for adoption. Please limit phone calls and e-mails inquiring about them.
