Mr. Alton Dame, age 94, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, December 5, 2012. He grew up during the Depression on the family farm in Buckley. Alton served his country during WWII and continued in the Army Reserves, retiring as a Captain in 1983. After his marriage to Ella May, he continued to farm; and then in 1954 they moved to Rockford .  Alton worked for Wolverine World Wide as a machine repairman, retiring in 1983. He and Ella May were faithful members of Rockford Baptist Church where Alton served as a deacon. Alton was a member of the Nehemiah Crew who repaired things around the church and enjoyed the fellowship, especially with coffee and rolls. He was a passionate golfer and a big time Tiger’s fan, loyally following his team for 79 years. Many people remember him bringing flowers from his garden to shut-ins and friends. Alton was a faithful man who had a positive and loyal attitude. He was the family’s “Mr. Fix-it.”  His gifts of woodworking have become valued treasures for family and friends. He was a life-long member of the Merrit Lamb Post #102 American Legion for 57 years. Alton was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Ella May, brothers, Charles, George, Roy, and Orlo, and sisters, Mable Lewis, Anna Lanning, Minnie Corcoran, Rose Loveless, and Myra Mongar. He is survived by his children, Sandra and Thomas Huebner, Larry and Cynthia Dame, and Ron Dame; 6 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. The Service of Praise and Thanksgiving for the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ for Mr. Dame will be Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Rockford Baptist Church with The Rev. Larry Rowland officiating. Military honors will be under the auspices of the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard with interment in Blythefield Memory Gardens . Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Porter Hills Foundation, 3600 E. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the Pederson Funeral Home on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
