Rams struggle at state track finals

It was a day filled with frustration for both the boys and girls track teams from Rockford in the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division 1 state track finals held Saturday, June 1st at East Kentwood High School. While they didn’t suffer the same fate as the boy’s team, the girls also suffered a fair share of disappointment en route to ringing up 18 points and finishing 11th as a team. National powerhouse Grosse Pointe South was the runaway meet winner with 76 points.

Sammy Cuneo had the top finish for any of the Rockford athletes competing with a third-place showing in the 200-meter dash finals. Cuneo finished with a time of 25.26 seconds in the finals.

Two relay teams and an individual placed sixth for the Rams in their respective events. The 4×400 team of Maria Anel, Makayla Clum, Morgan Harney and Allison Kelley ran a time of 3:59.30. The 4×800 quartet of Kerianne Schoff, Lauren Brasure, Morgan Harney and Morgan Benoit ran a 9:23.26 and Rachel Raab threw the shot put 37’11.25” to claim her spot.

The 4×200 relay team placed seventh with a time of 1:43.07. The members of that team were Clum, Allison Kelley, Elise Schierbeek and Cuneo. And rounding out the podium placers for Rockford was Maegan McCarthy with a throw of 115’11” in the discus.
