Rockford baseball successful on and off the field

Rockford baseball has not only enjoyed a resurgence on the diamond over the last several years, the academic prowess of the team has risen right in lock step. The Rams were honored again in 2013 as an Academic All-State team. They join the football and wrestling teams in receiving the most important accolade of all with this year’s distinction.

The grade point average (GPA) for Rockford was 3.64 based on a 4.0 scale. There was no credit given for advanced placement classes and the GPA accrued was based on the scholastic achievements of the entire roster.

“We are so proud of what these young men have achieved in a classroom setting to go along with their great success on the field as well,” said Rockford baseball coach Ian Hearn. “They are an excellent example that you don’t have to sacrifice academics to succeed as athletes. I am not positive how many times in a row this is for the team but it is something we strive for on a yearly basis.”

Kory Young, Jonathan Stewart, Brent Showers, Reid Kelley and Alex Hertel were also honored individually as members of the Academic All-District teams. Young and Stewart took that two steps further as both were honored as Academic All-Region and All-State members. Though the AP classes froze their accepted GPAs for this setting at 4.0, Young and Stewart led the way for the Rams with marks of 4.2 and 4.15 respectively.
