Police Officers arrested Travis Brown 31, of Lauderhill, Florida and Melissa Duncan 34, of Apopka, Florida as they were fleeing after attempting to cash a forged stolen check at the Choice One Bank located at 6795 Courtland in Rockford.
The people arrested are believed to be a part of the Felony Lane Gang. The organized crime gang is known to be based in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. They target recreational facilities and parks around the country where they break into unattended cars where women’s purses have been left inside. Checks and Identification are stolen from the purses, with the gang members cashing the stolen checks in the outside drive-up lane of area banks using the stolen identification and disguises to match.
The Rockford Department of Public Safety spent the past week investigating the break-ins of three cars in the City of Rockford on Monday August 12, 2013. A check from one of those break-ins was passed at Choice One causing the series of events that led to the arrests. Investigators also found checks, credit cards and identification for thirteen other people from the area who experienced car break-ins.
Brown and Duncan were taken to the Kent County Jail where they are awaiting their preliminary examinations at a later date. Brown was also wanted in Broward County, Florida for a Felony Probation Violation Warrant.
The Rockford Department of Public Safety asks that if you have information regarding the thefts or any information about the Felony Lane Gang to call the Kent County Metropolitan Fraud and Identity Theft Team who are now continuing the investigation.
