Things started a bit on the slow side for the girl’s basketball team from Rockford High School when they made the trek to Grand Haven to face off with the Buccaneers on Friday, February 13th. It appeared that neither team was ever going to mount much of anything offensively as Grand Haven led 8-6 after the first quarter and the two teams went to the locker room tied at 15-15 at the halftime break.
“I told the team that we needed to keep up the defensive intensity we showed in the first half when the second half began,” said Rockford Coach Jessica Yonkers. “We have several players who are consistent shooters and I knew the shots would begin falling at one point or another. Grand Haven has a scrappy team and they were right there with us going into the final quarter, but we started to pull away over the final eight minutes. It is always tough to win any game in the OK Red, and even more difficult when it is on the road.”
Rockford began to establish a little control in the third stanza and took a 31-27 lead into the final quarter after sporting a 16-12 edge in the third. The final quarter was all Rockford however as they used a 17-6 edge in points to eventually claim the important 48-33 OK Red win.
Leading the way for Rockford was Logan McCane with 13 points. She was ably abetted by 11 points from Tiana Colovos and eight from Maddie Watters.
The Win moved Rockford’s record to 10-6 on the season overall and 4-2 in conference play. The Rams ares still very much alive heading into the final two weeks of the 2014-15 season. This week will feature a pair of difficult contests when Rockford hosts Hudsonville on Tuesday, February 17th (too late for press) before venturing to East Kentwood on Friday, February 20th to meet up with the Falcons.
