The boy’s basketball team from Rockford continued their tour of some of the top teams in the state when they hosted an unbeaten contingent from Grand Ledge on Tuesday, February 10th. The Rams fell to the powerful Comets at Rockford by a score of 61-44 to fall to 5-9 on the season. The game marked the fifth tilt this season for a young Ram team against top ten teams in Michigan in Class A. That gauntlet included Muskegon, East Kentwood, Forest Hills Central, Kalamazoo Central and the aforementioned Comets.
“That is an excellent team they have there from Grand Ledge,” said Rockford Coach Nick Allen. “They took it to us from the opening possession and were firmly in control from start to finish. We need to refocus and work on some of the things we struggled with tonight.”
After finding themselves in only a three-point hole after the first quarter (12-9), the second and third quarters proved disastrous for Rockford. Grand Ledge outscored the Rams 38-22 over that time frame to take a 50-31 lead into the final eight minutes. They then coasted from there to eventually take home the 61-44 triumph.
Michael Peterson led Rockford with 12 points and Jason Majerle tossed in nine.
The Rams rebounded in a big way when they returned to OK Red action with a trip to Grand Haven on Friday, February 13th. Rockford drained nine three-pointers during the contest en route to a 79-48 drubbing of the host Buccaneers. Seven of those nine came in the second half as the Rams continued to hit open shot after open shot against a Grand Haven team that grew more demoralized as the game moved ahead and their deficit grew bigger.
The win moved Rockford to 4-2 in OK Red play and 6-9 overall. This week looms extra large for Rockford as they square off with the two teams they need to overtake in order to win the conference title. Rockford will first host Hudsonville on Tuesday, February 17th (too late for press) before traveling to East Kentwood to again face off with the powerful Falcons on Friday, February 20th
