The Rockford wrestling team made the trip to Grand Haven for the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s individual wrestling district tournament on Saturday, February 14th. When the smoke had cleared, Rockford sent five wrestlers on to this week’s regional round at Saginaw Heritage High School on Saturday, February 21st.
Included amongst those five advancing was an individual champion, a second and third-place finisher and a pair of fourth-place showings. There were also a pair of wrestlers who fell a single match short of earning the right to move ahead to the next round.
The Ram champion was senior Jared Bennett who posted a 6-3 decision in the 119 pound finals to move his record to 38-2 on the season. Sophomore Andy Hansen continued a stellar sophomore campaign and also forged ahead after falling via a pin to one of the state’s top wrestlers (Cam Bertucci of Grand Haven) in the championship finals at 125 pounds. Hansen still sports an excellent 34-5 record for the season.
Placing third for Rockford was senior 160-pounder Chris Bell who came out with a 6-5 decision win in the consolation finals to punch his ticket to Saginaw. Finishing fourth after losing in the consolation finals was senior Caleb Childers after a 4-2 loss. Childers touts a 27-10 overall record in a season that has been shortened a bit after an injury. And the final Ram qualifier was 189-pounder Tyler Glave who fell 5-2 in the consolation finals to finish fourth as well. Glave’s record sits at 17-18 thus far.
The Regional round will see the first place finisher from the Grand Haven district facing off with the fourth place finisher from the Alpena district, the second-place finisher facing the third-place finisher and right on down the line. Best of luck to all five of these outstanding wrestlers.
