Rams Ski Team prepares to compete at regionals

Rockford varsity skiers are preparing to compete in regional competition. The 2018 D1 Region 1 competition will take place on February 13 at Cannonsburg Ski Area. Rockford is one of thirteen teams racing for a spot at the State Finals. Other teams include Fenton (linden), Flushing, Grand
Blanc, Grand Haven (Holland Black River), Grand Rapids-Forest Hills Northern (Ada – Forest Hills Eastern), Holly (Oxford), Kalamazoo-Loy Norrix (Kalamazoo Central), Marquette, Okemos, Portage Central (Portage Northern), Traverse City Central, Traverse City West.

The fastest teams and a few of the fastest individual athletes in this region will earn the right to compete at the State Finals, hosted by Boyne Mountain on February 26th. Two athletes who competed in last year’s State Finals are competing at Regionals again this year.   Nick Rupert finished third in Giant Slalom and Haley Yeager with a 36th finish in GS and 29th in Slalom.

Rockford varsity ski racers include girls:

Captain- Abby Henschell, Karsen Ford, Haley Yeager, Amanda Skarda, Marina Vasquez-Huerta, Maurah Gorney and Bella Tinney.

Rockford varsity boys team includes:

Co-Captains- Nick Rupert and Cole Demarest, Evan Orvis, Jake Mortensen, Ian Henschell, and Connor Hoyle.

This is an opportunity to watch great D1 high school racing. Many of the State’s top ski racers will be at Cannonsburg to earn the right to move onto the State Finals later this month.
