Have you ever heard someone say, “Your guardian angel was watching over you?” I can think of a number of times in my life when someone might have said that to me!
Once, a large piece of lumber fell off a semi-truck trailer as I was passing it on the highway. I noticed it falling at just the right moment so that I could maneuver safely to avoid it. It then hit the road inches from my car and bounced harmlessly into the median. Another time, my father accidently let go of an ax as I walked out the garage door. I stopped in my tracks and the ax turned around to the blunt side just before hitting my thigh.
In these cases, some might say I had a guardian angel watching over me and others might say it was luck, but I think it was something more tangible.
In a book I often read, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, the author, Mary Baker Eddy, describes angels as God’s representatives and further defines them as “God’s thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect…”
Once, when I was four years old, I was playing in a park across the street from our home. There was a large statue that I would climb with my friends, racing to see who could get to the top first. The statue was slippery and not really made for climbing. One day, as I reached the very top, I lost my footing and was falling through the air, head first toward the concrete surrounding the statue. But I wasn’t afraid, and just as I neared the ground. I fell into my mother’s arms. Years later, I asked her about this incident and she explained that she had heard a voice (she was home alone) clearly telling her to go across the street to the park. She didn’t know why, but she obeyed and was there to catch me.
She said she was sure this had been an angel message from God, guiding her to the place she needed to be, right when she needed to be there.
My mother’s habit was to read the Bible and pray in the morning to help fill her thought with the Word of God in preparation for the day. She had just completed her praying when she heard the instructive voice. To me this is tangible and practical proof that when thought is turned toward God, we are able to hear angel messages from Him, which tenderly guide and guard us every day.
