Rockford Rotary is letting the cat out of the bag, or the secret out of the duck. The giant yellow bird is very visible in front of Ace Hardware in anticipation of its final move to the grassy knoll between the Peppermill Grill and Vitale’s in downtown Rockford. The huge creature, shipped by a slow boat from China, is part of this year’s Big Daddy Duck Race by Rockford Rotary that takes place June 9.
All over Rockford and beyond, businesses have been decorating much smaller ducks (see the Squire’s below), which will soon be displayed in storefronts around town. There are still 30 of these ducks available for $100 each. Voters can show their support by donating money to the ducks they like best. The ducks will also “race” down the Rogue River at 6 p.m. for a breathtaking ending at Richardson Sowerby Park.
The public can participate by helping choose the prettiest (or cleverest, or funniest) duck with cash votes, but can also purchase a chance to cash in with tickets for the Big Daddy Duck Race Raffle of just $5 with a June 11 drawing with one huge winner of $1,000! Tickets can be purchased at the Knape Industries, 10701 Northland Drive (the big duck’s first location) Ace Hardware or the Rockford Squire Newspaper at 331 Northland Drive.
To purchase a duck (but not the big duck) visit RockfordRotaryMI.com and click on the form to purchase a duck. All sales, tickets or ducks, are tax deductible and are used by the Rotary Foundation to support many local charities and services.
