Rockford Girls Water Polo finished second at the Regional Championship Tournament, held this past weekend, at East Kentwood High School.
The first game on Friday night was a tight contest. The Rams exchanged goals with Zeeland leading to a tie at the end of regulation play. Moving into overtime, the score remained unchanged. Into the second overtime, the Rams dropped one in the net, which not only won them the game, but also advanced the team into the State Championship Tournament in Saline on June 1.
In the second round of play on Saturday morning, the Rams were pitted against the Grandville Bulldogs. Grandville was tough, but the Rams were tougher. There was no stopping this team from getting into the championship game, and the final 10-4 score showed that the Rams meant business.
The final challenge of the day was against Hudsonville. In this evenly matched championship bout against last year’s state champions, the Rams fought hard. They traded goals throughout the game and were down by one, with one minute left.
As the clock counted down, the Eagles were holding on to the ball with 10 seconds to go. The Rams made a full court press attempt to seize the ball, but the Eagles saw it coming, and lobbed one to a player who shot the final goal at the buzzer making the final score 8-6.
In two weeks, the Rams face-off against AA Pioneer, in the first round at the State Championships.
