Local stained glass artist installs large window in Shelby Church

By Zoe Newmann

Eric Brown recently installed a large glass art piece inside a Michigan church.

Brown began the project after Shelby Michigan’s, David Nobles donated the stain glass window in memory of his wife Jeanette who recently passed away from cancer. The project in total took about three weeks to paint and put together.

The glass window was installed on May 28.  The glass piece has a beautiful religious scenery with wording that reads, “And whoever’s liveth and believe in me shall never die- John 11:26.”

Kendall art student Maria Orr did the painting and Brown put together the glass and framework. Brown is a self-taught craftsman who owns Eric Brown Stained Glass in Rockford. He has worked with wood, metal, and other materials outside of his glasswork. The method he uses to design and put together his glass is the same method that has been used for over 900 years.

“The recent Shelby church piece looks incredible,” Brown said.

The church is called the Shelby Seventh Day Adventist Church, located at 1929 South 58th Avenue in Shelby Michigan.

Brown started working with glass when he was 13-years-old growing up in Whitehall Michigan. He began working with glass after finishing a lamp that his brother tried to build but never finished. Now Brown has been in his Rockford location for 27 years. Before he gained ownership of the store he worked for the previous owner.
