Obedience is not one of those fun words we like to apply to our lives. We often like to follow our own thinking and our own plans. However, we will see that Jesus followed the authority of God and it turned out be a blessing to others. Let’s consider how we can follow his example of obedience and be a blessing to others as well.
Jesus says in John 8:28, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am the one I claim to be and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.” Jesus said only the things his Father, God, told him to say. A couple chapters later in John 12:49-50 Jesus says again, “For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.” Jesus obeyed God by speaking only His word. What a great example to us as we attempt to speak God’s word into the hearts of others.
Not only did Jesus obey God by speaking His word, he also obeyed by following God’s plan. The last part of Philippians 2:8 says of Jesus, “he humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross!” Jesus followed God’s plan and this act of obedience brought us hope for life to the full now and life eternal in God’s kingdom. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Ultimately, Jesus’ obedience brought blessing to others. May we follow his example and hopefully be a blessing to others as well.
