School Beat: 2018-19 School Year Brings a New Preschool Curriculum to Rockford Public Schools

By Lisa Jacobs, Executive Director – Community Services

Rockford Preschool and Child Care is implementing a new curriculum for the 2018-19 school year. Rockford Preschool and Child Care is currently four star rated with Great Start to Quality.  By implementing this new curriculum, the preschool hopes to achieve a five star rating during the 2018-19 school year.  The program is very thankful to the Rockford Education Foundation for their support.  Without the support of the Rockford Education Foundation, the updated curriculum would not have been possible.

The objective is to use a curriculum that is evidence-based and developmentally appropriate. It would allow our staff to not only assess students, but also our program. After researching curriculums, HighScope was the curriculum selected.  The HighScope curriculum began in the 1970s and today continues to be a valid early childhood curriculum.  It aligns with Michigan Early Childhood Standards for Preschool, National Association for the Education of Young Children, and is endorsed by Great Start to Quality.  Once a teacher is HighScope trained, they are always offered support and continued training.  Our staff began training during the 2017-18 school year.

To improve our programs, we needed to implement a state approved curriculum and assessment.  The HighScope curriculum provides resources for the teachers and the ability to evaluate the success of the students by analyzing the data that is produced by the objective assessments.  Another reason we chose the HighScope curriculum is the value and emphasis that is put on family involvement and communication.  The curriculum is one more way for teachers to connect with families and offer support.

Rockford Preschool and Child Care is extremely grateful to the REF for their gift.  The program is also extremely excited for the 2018-19 school year.  The new curriculum will insure a great transition from preschool to Kindergarten.
