William A. Gilcrest, age 93 of Sparta and formerly of Holland, passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at his home surrounded by his family.
Bill was born on November 17, 1925 in Holland, Michigan, the oldest of four children born to Albert and Evelyn (Exo) Gilcrest.
He worked for Seven Up Bottling Company in Holland for 20 years and retired from General Motors in 1991 after 28 years of service as a machinist. Bill was a lifetime member of the Shriners, the Masonic Lodge, and the VFW. He was 50 years sober and was very faithful to Alcoholics Anonymous for many years.
Bill was a decorated veteran of the United States Army serving with General Patton’s Third Army and fought at the Battle of the Bulge.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, Betty and Warren Baker, Don and Carol Gilcrest, and Patty and Jack Gogolin; his stepson David Stanek; and his cousin Mar-less Williams.
Bill is survived by his wife of 32 years, Fran Gilcrest of Sparta; his daughters, Laurie (Christopher) Holman of Minneapolis, MN and Billie (Joseph) Jordan of Rockville, MD; his grandson Andrew of New Orleans; his stepchildren, Lynne Stanek of Cedar Springs, Paula Stanek and Ron of Sparta, Carolyn Peterson of Jefferson, IA, Matthew Shryock of Graettinger, IA, and Jeffrey and Christine Lee of Meneffee, CA; 19 step grandchildren; many step great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at the First Congregational Church, 192 E Bridge Street NE, Rockford, MI 49341.
Memorial contributions may be given to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
