School Beat: School Lunch Donations

By John Henry – Food Service Director, Rockford Public Schools.

Rockford Food Service would like to thank the citizens of Rockford for their generous response to the previous article published about donations to the school lunch program. Multiple donations were made to families with high debt that were struggling to pay their students’ lunch bills. These donations will allow many families to begin the next school year without a negative balance and provide relief over summer break.

While these donations made a positive impact on selected families in our district, there are always families struggling to afford food. Those interested in assisting a family in need can contact for more information. If you are in need of assistance, please visit to apply for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program.

We appreciate the opportunity we have to provide Rockford students with quality food on a daily basis. It is our mission to make sure that no student goes hungry or is lacking proper nutrition. We never turn students away from a meal, even if they do not qualify for the Free and Reduced Lunch Program and are lacking the funds to pay for it. Proper nutrition is a key component of a quality education, and charitable acts like these ensure that students in need are receiving the food they need to fuel each school day.
