			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Army 2nd Lt. Kevin D. Carrier has graduated from Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga., and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.</p>
<p>During the 12 weeks of training, the officer candidate received &#8220;basic soldiering&#8221; instruction in leadership, professional ethics, soldier team development, combined arms tactics, weapons defense, combat water survival, squad drill, intelligence, field training exercises, day and night land navigation, confidence obstacle course, common core tasks, communications, staff and general military subjects, and physical fitness tests which include three-, four- and five-mile runs, and foot marches between 5-12 miles carrying rucksacks.</p>
<p>The candidate is tested on leadership skills and team work abilities required of a commissioned officer. Students learned to utilize acquired skills to function in &#8220;leader and follower&#8221; positions in squad and platoon sized elements, and evaluated in various leadership garrison positions while in a stressful and demanding field environment.</p>
<p>Carrier is the son of Meg Hackett of Rockford. He is a 2004 graduate of Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School. He earned a bachelor&#8217;s degree in 2008 from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind.</p>

<p>Pfc. Craig A. Hovarter, 23, of Rockford graduated from the United States Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego on July 29, 2011. He successfully completed 13 weeks of intensive basic training at MCRD San Diego as one of 48 recruits in Training Platoon 1007. While in basic training, Pfc. Hovarter achieved Platoon High PFT (personal fitness training) with a score of 300, leading his platoon to be the Honor Platoon. He also qualified as rifle expert.</p>
<p>Following 10 days home on leave, Hovarter will report to Camp Pendleton for one month at Military Combat Training then Military Occupation Specialty School. He will be stationed at Pensacola, Fla. following training.</p>

<p>Army Cadet Rambi K. Williams is a member of one of only eight teams throughout the U.S. Army Cadet Command to compete in this year’s Sandhurst Military Skills Competition at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.</p>
<p>The military skills competition includes cadets from selected ROTC detachments as well as cadets from West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School and international teams from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Britain, the Royal Military College from Canada, the National Military Academy from Afghanistan, the Royal Military College from Australia, the Military Academy of Taiwan and the Chilean Military School. Each team consists of a nine-member squad, each with at least one female, that must complete a series of military tasks during a rapid, non-tactical move along a prescribed seven-mile course. The cadets are tested on first aid, traversing a rope bridge, marksmanship, navigation and fitness. They are also tested on their mental agility, ability to assimilate problems, decision-making in a complex, stressful environment, teamwork and communication.</p>
<p>Williams is currently attending Michigan State University, East Lansing. She is the daughter of Sterry Williams and W. Rambi Williams, both of Rockford. The cadet graduated in 2008 from Rockford High School.</p>

<p>Army PFC Adam D. Burgess graduated basic combat training at Fort Jackson, S.C., on February 24, 2011. <p>PFC Burgess has moved on to Advanced Individual Training at Redrock Arsenal, Alabama.</p>
<p>Burgess graduated from Rockford High School in 2001. He is the son of Terry and Dave Burgess of Rockford. PFC Burgess proudly follows in the footsteps of his father Dave and his grandfathers, Melvin F. Burgess and Charles J. Huffman, all RA-U.S. Army veterans.</p>

<p>Army National Guard Pfc. Conner C. Van Splunter has graduated from One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo., which included basic military training and advanced individual training (AIT).</p>
<p>During basic military training, the trainee received instruction in drill and ceremony, weapons qualification, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army doctrine, history, principles and traditions.</p>
<p>During AIT, the soldier completed the military police specialist course to acquire skills to provide combat area support, conduct battlefield circulation control, area security, prisoner of war operations, civilian internee operations, and law and order operations. The trainee performed as a team member in support of battlefield operations, installation law and order operations and security of Army resources and installations. Additional training included providing peacetime support to the military community through security of resources, crime prevention programs, and preservation of law and order.</p>
<p>Van Splunter is the daughter of Craig S. and Christina B. Van Splunter of Rockford. She graduated in 2010 from Rockford High School.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Army Pfc. Matthew J. Salyer has recently graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics.</p>

<p>Salyer was home after graduation until Tuesday, Oct. 12, when he left for Fort Bliss, Texas. He is the son of Karen and Steve Salyer of Belmont, and is a 2007 graduate of Rockford High School.</p>
