Local student-athlete, Abigail Blanchard, from Rockford High School is a recipient of the 2011 Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) awards. She is part of a group of 25 high school seniors selected from more than 40,000 applicants across the country. The winners are top performers when it comes to academics, athletics, community service and leadership, and also include milk in their daily routines. Specifically, Blanchard’s accomplishments include All State and Academic All State honors in track and field for the 2008, 2009 and 2010 seasons as well as being recognized as team captain and MVP. SAMMY award winners know the importance of incorporating low-fat chocolate milk into their exercise recovery program. Chocolate milk provides protein to help build muscle and contains the right mix of nutrients to help refuel after exercise. Blanchard will receive a $7,500 college scholarship and attend an award ceremony at Disney World featuring two Milk Mustache celebrity guests. Each of the 25 winners also will star in a Milk Mustache ad to run in USA Today on June 25. National Milk Mustache “got milk?” campaign has created the first ever SAMMY MVP award. Friends, family and SAMMY award winner communities can vote for their favorite SAMMY winner at www.sammymvp.com. The scholar-athlete with the most votes will receive the title of SAMMY MVP and have an additional $5,000 donated to the charity of their choice. The Milk Mustache ad featuring Abigail Blanchard runs on June 24 in USA Today. An awards ceremony at Disney World will be held on June 25 Over the past 14 years, 350 student-athletes have won the coveted SAMMY award, setting a positive example for their peers.
