Security of self-government for Egyptians Even for an all-around sports person like me, I have to say that the events occurring in Egypt are causing me to read Section A of the Grand Rapids Press before picking up the sports section. It has even caused me to take a quick look on the Internet between clients to catch the latest developments. I’m encouraged by what I see. The Egyptian people have suffered for the last 30 years under President Hosni Mubarak, his henchmen, and a police force determined to keep the people suffering. This kind of sounds like what was occurring at the founding of our country. The people had been and were suffering under the tyranny of Great Britain. Take a few minutes to read the entire text of the Declaration of Independence as passed by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. Go beyond the famously quoted second paragraph, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights; that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” There is a whole litany of abuses spelled out in the next many, many paragraphs such as, “He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people… For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury… For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent… He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.” The detailing of these abuses goes on. I dare say the people of that day would know exactly what the Egyptians of today are going through. How we were so very fortunate to have leaders such as George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson not only all be alive at the same time but also be in position to “mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred honor” was truly providential.
