On March 24, Our Lady of Consolation (OLC) School grades six through eight competed in the 28th Annual Region 12 Science Olympiad Tournament held at Grand Valley State University. The Science Team trained under Mrs. Schuler, the eighth-grade science teacher; Mr. Parker, the middle school social studies teacher; and Mr. Lang, the middle school math teacher. The school participated in 23 events lasting throughout the entire day. OLC starting training for the science fair projects in October 2011, and training sessions were conducted on a weekly basis. There were 42 schools in attendance and over 3,000 students, coaches and family members attending the science fair. OLC competed very well in all categories. In the Catch-It event, the team of Elizabeth Urbik, Yvonne Danko and Caitlin Wilson not only brought home the gold but set a new record. Catch-It is an event where a 67-gram steel ball is dropped in intervals of 30 centimeters down a pipe. On the bottom of the pipe is a basket constructed of small wood sticks over a hole. If the wood-constructed basket catches the steel ball at 30 centimeters, the steel ball is raised to the next 30-centimeter level up. You have 10 tries or until the basket breaks until you are complete. The OLC girls completed a height of 120 centimeters until the 10 tries were completed.
