Exchange students earn Corner Bar Hall of Fame

Everyone  has heard of Corner Bar hot dogs, but how many people are prepared to sit down and eat 12 in a row? Two visiting students accomplished this feat to join the hundreds on the Hot Dog Hall of Fame at the Corner Bar. Competing or offering support were: Nelson Nunes Filho from Brazil, Manuel Martinez from Spain, Anabel Carrillo from Ecuador, Lukas Kutilek from the Czech Republic, Kate Podhradska from Slovakia, and Jimmy Hunt from Kent City. Lukas Kutilek from the Czech Republic and Nelson Nunes Filho (Filho means Junior, who knew?) from Brazil are the newest names that will go on the restaurant walls after eating the dogs Saturday, May 9. Saturday was Nelson’s 18th birthday. Lukas ate 12 dogs in two hours and 25 minutes. Nelson ate his 12 in just under 45 minutes, WOW! Manuel could only handle eight of the dogs, Kate managed four of them before admitting defeat. Kate opted for an ice cream/cookie desert before attempting her fifth hot dog and then stopped. Anabel is a vegetarian and had a veggie wrap. Jimmy, who hates hot dogs and chili both, managed to choke down two and a half of those chili dogs in support of his friends. A good time was had by everyone and the contestants entertained other patrons that were having lunch at the Corner Bar.

Exchange students to try for Corner Bar Hall of Fame

May 7, 2009 // 0 Comments

Rockford exchange students challenged to join in as well A group of students attending Kent City High School have decided to try to leave a permanent reminder of their time in the United States by putting their name on the Corner Bar Hall of Fame, eating 12 hotdogs in four hours. They challenge students from other countries going to school in Rockford to do the same. Lukas Kutilek, age 18, of the Czech Republic is staying with Cedar-Rock area residents  Phil and Laverne Calkins and saw the many names on the walls of the Rockford restaurant. He will try to add his name beginning at noon this Saturday, May 9, along with his classmates who are also foreign exchange students. He will be joined by Manuel Martinez, age 16, of  Spain,  Nelson Filho, age 18, of Brazil and Kate Podhradska, age 16, of Slovakia. Not participating due to vegitarianism are Anabel Carrillo, age 18, of Ecuador and Chrissy Schuler, age 18, of Germany. Both will be on hand to offer support and would eat vegetarian dogs if the Bar offers them. All the students would love to have anyone else try for the fabled Wall or come on down to cheer them on.
