The Rockford varsity volleyball team, fueled by the support of the Ram Nation student body, stormed through district play last week earning the 2011 district title. The Rams, who hosted district play at Rockford High School, cruised to three victories, capping off wins versus Greenville, Forest Hills Northern, and a championship victory over Lowell on Saturday. The Rams earned the right to move on to regional play at Jenison High School this week, joining Grandville, Grand Haven and Traverse City West. The two teams earning first-game regional wins are scheduled to play Thursday at Jenison High School for the regional crown. The Rams, 55-8, played gritty and focused, never relenting a loss throughout the district round. The championship match against the Red Arrows of Lowell found the Rams leading two games to zero in game three, but within a point of dropping the third set, Lowell up 24-23. After a strategic time out by Coach Delacher and a Ram re-grouping, the Lady Rams settled down and turned back Lowell’s push. Rockford won the game 26-24 and along with it a district title.
The Rockford Rams varsity volleyball team powered through this past week with a convincing OK Red conference win Thursday, Oct. 7, and then a championship title at the Byron Center Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 9. The Rams moved to 39-7 overall, and 5-0 in OK Red standings. The Rams made quick work of the Bulldogs at Grandville, winning 25-15, 25-12 and 25-18. With a day’s rest, the Rams then played in the Bryon Center Invitational Saturday. The Lady Rams spent the entire day digging, passing, setting and hitting their way to a perfect 6-0 record. This day included wins over South Christian, Kenowa Hills, Coopersville, Unity Christian, Lakewood and South Christian again in the championship match. The Rams compete Thursday, Oct. 14 in an OK Red match versus the Hudsonville Eagles. Both teams stand on top of the OK Red conference with identical 5-0 records. This becomes a pivotal match with only two games left on the conference schedule. The Rams host this “showdown of unbeatens” on the Rockford High School home court with action beginning at approximately 6:45 p.m. Come cheer the Rams to victory and honor the Rams’ senior players on Senior Night.
The Rockford Rams volleyball team moved to 3-0 in OK Red action with a win over Muskegon last Thursday night, Sept. 23, at Muskegon High School. The Rams won the match in three straight games: 25-8, 25-7 and 25-9. The win improved the Rams’ overall record to 28-5. On Saturday, Sept. 25, the Rams traveled to Portage Central High School to compete in a tournament featuring the top-ranked volleyball programs in the state in both Class A and B. Rockford finished pool play with wins over Delton-Kellogg and Plainwell. In power pool play, Rockford lost to number-one-ranked Marian three games, in a best-of-three match, and then made a stand with a convincing win over number-four-ranked Portage Central in two straight wins. The Rams—seeded number two overall in tournament bracket play—then lost in the quarterfinals to conference opponent East Kentwood in two straight sets. The Rams look to avenge their loss to East Kentwood this Thursday night, Sept. 30, when the Falcons visit Rockford in an OK Red conference showdown. This match will feature two undefeated teams in conference play and promises to be an exciting contest.
