In the last full regatta of the season, the Rockford Rams crew team traveled to Culver, Ind., to compete against 10 schools/club teams from across the Midwest region. The Rams once again proved that they were a force to be reckoned with, as they quickly placed boat after boat from the individual heats into finals. As the finals began progressing, Rockford claimed first-place honors in almost every event. Culver adjusted the races based on how many teams were competing in each event. As a result, Rockford needed to enter junior boats in the senior categories. They also were required to enter the lightweight eight boats in the senior eight events in order for the lightweights to compete. That didn’t seem to impact the team, however. In most cases, Rockford claimed first and second in each event as a result of the change in the race schedules. Taking first place for the Rams were: • women’s senior four: Olivia Kacsits, Maddie Anderson, Julia Fraser, Kate Fraser, coxswain Lauren Fay • men’s senior eight: Jake Madsen, Zach Haugen, Nate Harrison, TJ Jacobs, Austin Burris, Mitch Griffis, Ben Pitts, Bryce Vanderberg, and coxswain Margaret Saelens • women’s lightweight eight: Raechel Wrona, Molly Guthrie, Andrea Galloway, Lora Gleghorn, Emily Prus, Lynsey Felty, Chloe McColgan, Kait Fugate, and coxswain Dani Tefft • women’s junior eight: Kendra Bilardello, Kara Korson, Kendall McConnohie, Rebecca Markam, Emma Korson, Courtney Brummeler, Lauren Madsen, Jenna Brower, and coxswain Becca DeKorne • men’s lightweight four: Sam Berndt, Troy Paskiewicz, Isaac Blenman, Dillan Itter, and coxswain Sam Tefft • men’s novice eight: Jake Kaiser, Tyler Perkins, Corey Fase, Ben Pitts, Chris Gaigalis, Tristan VanFossen, Kevin Clinthorne, and coxswain Carly Johnson • men’s senior four: Haugen, Jacobs, Vanderberg, Burris, and coxswain Saelens Second-place finishers were: • men’s lightweight eight: Paskiewicz, Josh Houn, Berndt, Tyler Truxton, Sean Ebel, Itter, Alek Walker, Blenman, and coxswain Sam Tefft • women’s senior eight: Kacsits, K. Fraser, Sarah Lemanski, Erin Fedeson, Anderson, J. Fraser, Amy Fedeson, Ali Prus, and coxswain Fay • women’s lightweight four: Wrona, Rachel Alberta, Galloway, Stephani Sawicki, and coxswain Shelby Hodges • women’s novice lightweight four: Sammy Erickson, Holly Kregel, Jennifer Vlas, Corinne Prater, and coxswain Alyssa Hendricks • men’s junior eight: Andy Carley, Scott Ginebaugh, Tim Carlson, Eric […]

The Grand Rapids Junior Pacers Prep Team traveled to Denver, Colo., April 10 and 11 to take part in the 2010 National Wheelchair Basketball Association Championships. The team came home with the national runner-up trophy, with the national champion Bay Area Rollers (San Francisco) team barely squeaking by. The Jr. Pacers took first place at the 2010 Midwest Conference championships. “It’s always great to see the kids improve their game as the season progresses. This year each player made significant improvement and that was evident by their showing at the national championships in Denver,” said assistant coach Mike Totte. “We need to build on this year’s success and make another run at a national championship next year.” Team members include CJ Blackwell (East Kellogsville Elementary), Shane Brewer (Pine Island Elementary, Comstock Park), Tanner Gentry (Campbell Elementary, Muskegon), Thomas Konor (East Grand Rapids High School), Codey Minard (Tri-County Middle School, Pierson), Oksana Parmenter (Sand Lake Elementary), Alex Totte (Hayes Middle School, Grand Ledge), and Natalie Wright (Appleview Elementary, Sparta). Twelve-year veteran, Coach Pat Besta, also plays with the Pacers adult wheelchair team. Totte also serves on the Grand Rapids Wheelchair Sports Association (GRWSA) board. The Junior Pacers are sponsored by GRWSA, a nonprofit organization designed to help children and adults whose various physical challenges require them to use a wheelchair to play competitive and recreational sports. The Jr. Pacers Wheelchair Basketball teams are open to any physically disabled youngster who is school age, kindergarten to high school senior.
Did you know that one of the top golf teaching professionals in the world is a former Rockford golfer? Or that the assistant golf coach at the University of Michigan is a former Rockford golfer? To create a certain amount of “living history” within Rockford High School’s golf programs, former Rams golfers and athletes are encouraged to compete in the third annual Rockford Rams Golf Alumni Scramble at BraeSide Golf Course in Rockford on Saturday, June 19. Proceeds of this event will benefit the Rockford boys golf programs. The funds are used for travel expenses, practice equipment, practice rounds, and more. The four-man scramble will have a 2 p.m. shotgun start. Ladies will start from the red tees, and men and boys from the blue tees. The cost of $240 per team or $60 per player includes 18 holes, a cart, range balls, lunch and prizes. Registration forms and more information may be found online at rockfordramsgolf.com/announcements.html. The deadline for registration is Sunday, June 13. Please make checks payable to “Rockford Boys Golf” and send to Coach Eric Cullum, 332 Adolph St., Rockford, MI 49341. Coach Cullum may be contacted at (616) 433-8417 or by e-mail at email@example.com or JECullum@rockfordschools.org.
