Runyon Mr. Larry L. Runyon, age 65, of Rockford passed away at his home while surrounded by his loving wife and children on Saturday, June 18, 2011. He was born at home with the help of his family on Long Street in Grand Rapids. In 1954, his parents, Orville and Beatrice purchased a farm on Ten Mile Road near the expressway in Rockford. Larry grew up helping on the farm, which gave him great work ethics. While attending Rockford High School, he left and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Nancy and Larry were sweethearts and, while he was in the Navy, they wrote love letters. In December 1964, they were married at Courtland-Oakfield United Methodist Church. When he came home from the service, Larry went to work at Steelcase, working there for 28 years. He left Steelcase to care for his mother. After she died, he worked for Spec Tool Company for another 16 years. To make extra money, Larry would work on fixing engines. He loved music, was a fisherman, golfer, and would spend time tinkering with cars. Nancy and Larry loved their Saturday excursions. For years, they showed their cherished Monte Carlo, which won many awards, and also his Corvette. Family was very important to Larry. His advice to his children was to “work hard, and your marriage will be forever.” He is survived by his wife of 46 years, the former Nancy Squires; children, Todd and Susan Runyon of Jenison, Tom and Dori Runyon of Allendale, Kimberly and David Benedict of Rockford; grandchildren, Joshua Runyon, Michelle Runyon and her fiancé Jon Hesselink, Tyler Runyon, Christopher Runyon and his fiancée Sarah Hugg, Robert Runyon, Ashley Benedict, and Brooke Benedict; great-grandson, Christopher “Junior” Runyon; sisters, Mrs. Jackolynne Rose and Mrs. Jean Muncy; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville “Eddy” and Bernice Runyon; his sister, Dawn Hill and her husband Robert; infant brother, Butchie; and brothers-in-law, Ron and Yotes. The service for Mr. Runyon will be Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Courtland-Oakfield United Methodist Church with Pastor Jeff Williams officiating. Military honors will be under the auspices of the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard with interment in Blythefield Memory Gardens. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked […]
