The competitive OK Red season and three months of tough weekend tournament play has chiseled the Rockford varsity volleyball team to toughness. The Rams have earned a trip to the state quarterfinals in the MHSAA state volleyball tournament. Wins over two OK Red teams were on the Rams’ schedule last week and Rockford’s two victories over Grandville and Grand Haven assured the Rams a regional title and a trip to Caledonia in the state quarterfinals. The regional tournament, held at Jenison High School, had Rockford securing victories over Grandville, 25-10, 25-14, 25-21, and then in the title match, beating Grand Haven, 25-20, 25-18, 25-16. Rockford, ranked number two in Class A, seemed to bring out their opponents’ very best game with each team lining up to take a shot at knocking off the Rams. Rockford has met each team punch for punch and, like they have all season, stayed focus and stayed in their own game. The first set of the regional title match versus Grand Haven found the score locked at 18-18 with each team trading kills and trading points in succession. Rockford then kicked up the energy and charged past the Bucs to secure the first set win, 25-20. Set two found the Rams on the wrong side of a 6-1 score, but Rockford never flinched and battled back to even the score and then cruised to win sets two and three, earning the regional championship victory. The Rams earn the opportunity to play number six-ranked Gull Lake on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at Caledonia High School. The match determines who advances to the state semifinals to be held at 5:30 p.m. at the Kellogg Center in Battle Creek on Thursday, Nov. 17.
