It was Senior Night at Rams Stadium Thursday, May 12, when the Wildcats of Northview came to take on the Rockford girls soccer team for the final non-conference game of the season. The Rams were coming off a 2-1 win from Wednesday night at West Ottawa, and were ready for the Wildcats. The six seniors: Sydney Benda, Kara Klausing, Allison Hazy, Emily Cowan, Melanie Esch and Rebecca Manshaem, were honored before the game in front of the team and fans. Rockford controlled most of the tempo of the game in the first half, but the Wildcats kept them slightly out of rhythm. With many shots on the Northview goal and missed opportunities, the Rams finally made it on the board with a hard-fought goal from sophomore forward Katie Hartnett. The first half ended 1-0 Rams. In the second half, the Rams were much more in sync with each other. They dominated the majority of the ball time, forcing several corner kicks and, with less than three minutes into the half, junior Jordan Ryfiak found the back of the net off a corner kick from senior co-captain Emily Cowan. Shortly after, junior midfielder Erika Scott put one between the pipes from a corner kick from junior midfielder Mikayla Goldsmith. Two more goals were recorded from the Rams: sophomore Melissa Biener netted one in the 65th minute on a pass from Hartnett, and Scott and Goldsmith teamed up once again on a corner kick to make the final score Rockford 5 Northview 0. Late in the second half, with the game well in hand, Head Coach Steve Thomas had all six seniors in the game at the same time and subbed all of them out one last time together to the applause of all in attendance. The Rams will play one last game at East Kentwood for the season before the playoffs begin. It will be a battle for first place, as both teams are now tied for first in the OK Red.
