OLC gymnasium floor newly tiled

Members of the Our Lady of Consolation (OLC) fourth-grade girls basketball team autograph the gym floor following their game against Saints Peter and Paul Ionia. The floor was removed the following day and replaced with new tile. OLC’s gym recently went through an extreme makeover with new paint, lights and floor, thanks to the school parents and parishioners who helped raise the funds for this project.

New wastewater plant recognized as engineering achievement

The PARCC Side Clean Water Plant in northern Kent County has received the 2009 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers, Michigan Section. This award also honors Prein&Newhof, the local engineering firm that planned, designed and oversaw construction for the project. The new plant currently processes approximately four million gallons of wastewater each day with a state-of-the-art membrane bioreactor treatment system. It is the largest plant of its kind in Michigan. The plant is owned by the North Kent Sewer Authority, and processes wastewater from various communities, including the City of Rockford and the townships of Alpine, Cannon, Courtland, and Plainfield. Celebrating 40 years in business, Prein&Newhof is a full-service civil engineering firm that employs 90 full-time personnel including engineers, surveyors, drafters, geologists, chemists, communication specialists and support staff. In addition to its offices in Grand Rapids, Byron Center, Muskegon and Kalamazoo, the firm maintains its own environmental laboratory adjacent to its headquarters in Grand Rapids.

ERMS students participate in WMU Honor Band

Seven students from East Rockford Middle School (ERMS) were selected to participate in the Western Michigan University All-Star Middle School Honor Band. The students were accompanied by Rebecca Kilgore-Longtin, ERMS band director. The event took place on October 27 at Miller Auditorium on the campus of Western Michigan University. The selected students spent the day rehearsing and learning from the renowned conductor and composer Douglas Akey. They were also able to participate in the Bronco Marching Band rehearsal as well as enjoy performances by the University Trombone Choir and the University Concert Band. The day was culminated with performances by the Middle School Honor Band and a combined orchestra of the WMU Concert Band with the Middle School Honor Band.
