The Rams varsity boys golf team won another OK Red match on Tuesday, May 5 at Stonegate Golf Club in Muskegon. The Rams struggled a bit with the greens at par 37 Stonegate, but triumphed in the end. Rockford came in first place with a score of 159, followed by East Kentwood with 188 and Muskegon with 225. The Rams were led by Steven Mette, Eric Conroy and Trent Davison, each scoring 39, and Jake Chaffee with a score of 42. On Saturday, May 9, Rockford hosted the 2009 Rockford Spring Classic at Cedar chase Golf Club, a 6,460-yard course, par 72. Conditions were partly sunny, 57 degrees, with around 10-20 mph winds. Host Rockford again took first place with a score of 334, followed by Grandville (338), West Catholic (340), Greenville (355), and the B teams from Rockford and Grandville tying for fifth place with scores of 380. Davison led the Rams’ varsity team with a score of 80, followed by Conroy (84), Sam Gallup (84) and Mette (86). The Rams’ B team was led by Robert Pierson with a score of 91, followed by Darren Mazur (94), Jon Hughey (97) and Alex Fox (98). The OK Red post-season match-up at Grand Haven is on Thursday, May 14, followed by the East Lansing Classic on Friday, May 15, at 7:30 a.m. Watch next week’s Squire for results.
Rams varsity golf
The Rockford boys varsity golf team defeated Grand Haven and West Ottawa at Grand Haven Golf Club on Thursday, April 16. The overall match medalist was Sam Gallup of Rockford with a score of 38, followed closely by Jake Chaffee of Rockford with 39. Rockford posted a score of 250 against Grand Haven’s 258 and West Ottawa’s 285. Trent Davison scored 40, Steven Mette 41, Adam Hoard 44, and Eric Conroy 48. The team then went on to win the Wilson Spring Classic at Gracewil Country Club, hosted by Kenowa Hills, on Saturday, April 18. Rockford’s score of 310 was followed by Spring Lake’s 316, West Catholic with 319, Kenowa Hills 322, Comstock Park 330, Cedar Springs 337, Northview 340, Allendale 350, Union 380, Kent City, 386, and Coopersville with 391. Conroy scored 75 for third, Davison tied for fourth with 75, Gallup also tied with 77 for fifth, and Hoard scored 82 for the top 20. Mette scored 85 and Chaffee 87. This was a very interesting effort for the Rockford boys varsity golf team as they tried to three-peat in the Wilson Spring Classic,” said Coach Eric Cullum. “We felt some interesting pressure during this day, but we kept fighting and came out on top. I am very proud of Eric Conroy for finishing third. It is only a matter of time before this group really starts playing very well. We are very proud of our victory and excited for things to come.”
The junior varsity B boys golf team had their first match on April 13 at Braeside Golf Course. The weather was indicative of what spring golf can be like-40 degrees, windy and rainy. Both the Rockford and Northview golfers braved the weather to compete in their first match of the season. Northview narrowly won the match with a score of 191 compared to Rockford’s 199. Coach Rick Kelbel was proud of the team for breaking 200, and said, “In weather like that, I knew if my team broke 200 they would have a great shot to win, but Northview pulled it out. I was proud of my golfers.” Team captain Sam Barnard led the way for Rockford with a 48, Mitch Sloboda and Casey Cook each shot 49, and Alex Lewis shot 53, for the team’s total of 199.
