Upon the strength of a 38 from senior Sam Gallup and 39s from Trent Davison and Steven Mette, the Rockford Rams varsity golf team was victorious over East Kentwood and Muskegon on the afternoon of May 4 at Stonegate Golf Club. Rockford took first place with a score of 158, followed by East Kentwood with 167 and Muskegon with 229. Scoring for the Rams were Gallup with 38, Davison and Mette with 39 each, Eric Conroy with 42, Jake Chaffee with 44, and Matt Smith with 52, on the course’s front nine, par 37. Many boys varsity golf teams that were planning on playing in the second annual Rockford Spring Classic varsity tournament at Cedar Chase Golf Club were wondering if they would compete on Saturday, May 8. Ten teams from nine different schools arrived at Cedar Chase Golf Club in Cedar Springs in cold, misty and windy conditions. The weather didn’t worsen, but it did not get better. The wind blew from 15 to 35 mph and the temperature never went above 40 degrees until the tournament was over. The Rockford Rams defeated a field with four other state-ranked teams, including Haslett (number one in Div. II). Rockford’s A team scored 306, followed by Haslett with 309, West Michigan Christian 316, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep 325, Greenville 334, Kalamazoo Central 335, Rockford’s B team with 341, Wayland 347, Byron Center 359, and Tri County with 397. The Rams were led to victory by a gutsy one-under-par 71 turned in by Gallup. Also scoring for Rockford were Chaffee with 77, Davison with 78, Conroy 80, Jake Stephan 80, and Robert Pierson with 85. Scoring for Rockford’s B team were Robert Perry with 84, Alec Dewitt 85, David Keller and Nick Delafuente each with 86, Matt Smith 88, and John Hughey with 97.
