The Rams volleyball team completed their 2011 regular season with a perfect 7-0 record by beating Grand Haven last Thursday night, Oct. 20. The Rams, 48-8 overall, used precision passing and tough serving to beat Grand Haven at their home gym. The Rams then wrapped up and brought home the championship of the Mattawan Invitational last Saturday, Oct. 22, with wins over Okemos, Lakeview, Mattawan, Hudsonville, Detroit Seaholm, and St. Philips Catholic Central. Rockford’s next play will be in the OK Red tournament at Grand Haven High School on Saturday, Oct. 29. MHSAA state tournament play begins Monday, Oct. 31, with Rockford hosting the first round of districts.
Rockford Rams Volleyball Team
The Rockford Rams volleyball team finished a strong week of play, winning five matches while not giving up a single set loss in any match. The number two ranked Rams in Class A improved to 2-0 in the OK Red and 25-7 overall on the season. The Rams beat Muskegon in conference play Thursday, Sept. 15, and then won the championship of their own Rockford Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 17. The Rams face OK Red rival East Kentwood at the EK Fieldhouse this Thursday, Sept. 22, in a match of conference teams who both sit atop the OK Red standings. Rockford then travels to Kalamazoo Saturday, Sept. 24, to play in a tournament at Portage Central High School filled with the top teams in the state in both Class A and B.
The Rockford Rams volleyball team moved to 3-0 in OK Red action with a win over Muskegon last Thursday night, Sept. 23, at Muskegon High School. The Rams won the match in three straight games: 25-8, 25-7 and 25-9. The win improved the Rams’ overall record to 28-5. On Saturday, Sept. 25, the Rams traveled to Portage Central High School to compete in a tournament featuring the top-ranked volleyball programs in the state in both Class A and B. Rockford finished pool play with wins over Delton-Kellogg and Plainwell. In power pool play, Rockford lost to number-one-ranked Marian three games, in a best-of-three match, and then made a stand with a convincing win over number-four-ranked Portage Central in two straight wins. The Rams—seeded number two overall in tournament bracket play—then lost in the quarterfinals to conference opponent East Kentwood in two straight sets. The Rams look to avenge their loss to East Kentwood this Thursday night, Sept. 30, when the Falcons visit Rockford in an OK Red conference showdown. This match will feature two undefeated teams in conference play and promises to be an exciting contest. Monday night, Sept. 13, the Rockford High School gymnasium featured two of Michigan’s top Class A volleyball programs in the state when the visiting Portage Central Mustangs took on the Rockford Rams. The Rams got hot early and never cooled off as they won this best-of-five match in three straight sets, 25-18, 25-20 and 25-18. The Rams showed strength in all areas of their game and featured skilful play at all positions. The Rockford topped OK Red conference opponent West Ottawa in three straight sets at Rockford High School last Thursday night, Sept. 16. The best-three-of-five match was won by the Lady Rams, 25-17, 25-17 and 25-18. The Rockford team moved to 2-0 in the conference and 23-4 overall on Thursday. They continued their strong team play, excelling in all facets of their game as they prepare for the tough OK Red conference play ahead. In continued action at Rockford High School, the host Rams finished runner-up to Novi in a six-team tournament on Saturday, Sept. 18. The Rams finished the day 5-1 to up their overall season record to 27-5; 2-0 in OK Red action. The Rams traveled to Muskegon on Monday, Sept. 20, and then make a trip to Portage Central Saturday, Sept. 25, for additional tournament action.
