The Rockford Raptors 13U baseball team compiled a 9-2 record and finished second at the 13U AAA World Series held in Battle Creek on July 13-17. With a strong showing in this tournament, the Raptors ended their 2009 season ranked number three in Michigan and number 11 nationally in the USSSA power-ranking standings. In the World Series, the Raptors completed pool play with a perfect 3-0 record with victories over the Livingston Storm, Fort Wayne Cyclones and Diamonds Black. In bracket play, the Raptors compiled victories over GABA Tribe (Ill.), Millard Blue Athletics (Neb.), South Portage Storm, Around-The-Horn Stampede and West Michigan Wildcats. Their lone loss came at the hands of Diamonds Black. Ironically, the Raptors would meet up again with Diamonds Black in the final game to determine who would move on to the championship bracket. Both teams were very familiar with each other, as this would be their third meeting of the tournament. The game was close early on, but the Raptors gained the upper hand and pulled away for an 11-3 victory in a shortened five-inning game. In the championship bracket, the Raptors faced the Detroit Metro Stars, who were ranked number one in the national USSSA power rankings. In a back-and-forth game, the Raptors held a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning, but were overcome by the Stars, who took a 7-5 advantage going into the last inning. The Raptors were able to plate one run, but came up short in a tough 7-6 loss. The runner-up trophy was well-earned as the Raptors ended their 2009 season with a 46-12-1 record.
